Thanks, Kelly, you did a great job describing the frustration many of us go through when trying to get our credit reports.

I recently gave Experian a dollar to get my report because they refuse to provide me with the free annual report online. I know exactly what you mean by the their hard sell when you try to cancel. Fortunately they didn't charge me for the subscription.

"Something is really screwed up with our system."

You are so right and you have no idea HOW screwed up the system is. I just try to stay OUT of the system as much as possible.

Good luck with your mortgage and be aware that the bankers and brokers make the credit bureaus look like saints. It's a jungle out there!

Thank you for exposing this! I got burned by the Experian $1 credit report scam. I had first gone to MyFICO.com to get reports from all 3 bureaus as I was about to seek a mortgage. Our lender had told us that Experian and TransUnion were the bureaus they typically checked with so it was important to get my Experian score. Much to my surprise, when I ordered the 3 bureau package, I was only able to get reports/scores from TransUnion & Equifax. There was no longer an option for Experian. However, I did get a credit to check my report & score again with the other two bureaus.

I still needed that score, though, so I went to Experian's site. Only $1 to get my credit report. Wow! That's great...So I thought. I guess I'd heard that there was some law where everyone was supposed to be able to check their report for free through one of the bureaus...I wasn't sure. I couldn't remember, but I thought maybe it was through Experian and the $1 charge was for the score calculation. Fine. I submitted my info and then I hear that the $1 is to subscribe me to some $14.95 a month B.S. What?! Okay, so I could cancel free of charge within 7 days. All right...I'd get my score and then I'd do that.

When I called to cancel, I was put through hell. The lady on the phone guilt tripped me continuously, made it seem like I was a careless, irresponsible person who didn't CARE about my beloved credit score. I said "NO - PLEASE CANCEL THE SERVICE" continuously. After each rejection, I was given another spiel about how I should check my credit monthly. It took a long time on the phone just to cancel the membership. After all this, they STILL charged me $14.95! After watching the bank to make sure this charge did not show up again, I just let it slide. It's sad that I would give up $14.95 in order to not have to endure the phone bank HELL that was the Experian call center.

I am dismayed that lenders, etc. will continue to check credit through this bureau who measures the trustworthiness and responsibility of consumers...through completely dishonest, misleading, and untrustworthy means. I'm sorry, but shouldn't the ones keeping permanent records on our trustworthiness be trustworthy themselves? Credit scoring should NOT be a big business. Something is really screwed up with our system.

Great blog!

Your not alone and I share your sentiment, frustration and disgust!!

I have been blessed to never let my FICO score hinder my financial life. That said, I learned early on how corrupt the practices of the FICO scoring system were and did my due diligence to monitor my own effectively. Make no mistake personal accountablility is critical. However, for those who play by the rules, pay the bills on time, do not over extend themselves and live responsibly, to be judged by a completely biased, under regulated and highly speculative third party is rediculous.

Given it's original intent to alleviate discriminatory practices in lending, the FICO scoring system has methodicaly mutated in to nothing more then a third party revenue stream for lenders and the Federal Govt! It is truly laughable that all services such as MyFICO, etc., sell their services under the guise that you somehow control your own score... ridiculous as evidenced in original post!! In the interest of full disclosure I have been, like many, lured in to peeking at my score and even having them monitor them for ID theft.

All in all, this is a broken system that has been in need of serious regulation and oversight for many years!! I am disgusted to think at the number of lives, bankruptcies, and billions of dollars collected in higher interest rates by lenders praying on uninformed, ignorant or plain lazy buyers. Make no mistake, I believe in free enterprise/market system and can understand the business model but am at odds with it's current and perverse mutation.

Keep the great posts!

I received a call from New Life Solutions Feb/29/2012 telling me how they can reduce my mortgage saving me up to 70%, and that 90% of their clients are with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage that have been helped, I was convinced that I was finally going to get help, they asked me to gave them my S.S.# and banking routing number, I did not have it on hand and told them that I will call them back but insisted that I will loose my chance to qualify if I hang up, instead they will call me back in 5 minutes as I gathered my personal information. They sent me a contract thru Fed Ex email and told me once you received it call them as soon as possible to start my contract. I went to fed ex once received the contract I saw my name signed and initials on the contract, I did not even sign the contract it was not my signature! I was going to be withdrawn on my account 7 monthly payments of $1750.00 & 2 payments of $1500.00 right away I called my bank and froze my account, I went to the website thru my mobile device and found out that people were getting scammed by them. I called them back and told them not to call ever again and to remove me from their list. They kept calling me at work and on my cell after the second day I decided to read the contract and read that I had 5 days to cancel, so called directly the company they use for withdrawing funds called MEDICORE i was still in their system my funds would of started to been withdrawn starting every ninth of the month. Medicore canceled my withdrawals luckily I had two days left otherwise if I just ignore the contract I would have been liable to pay, I was transferred to new life solutions to confirm my cancelation from there I was immidietly transferred to Brandon he tried to convince me that the scam I read on the website was false, I listen and kept saying no thanks so finally he gave up and said have a nice day and hung up. All this caused me arguments with my wife sleepless nights thinking what was going to happen to my finances. Please read the contracts to make sure you have the right to cancel within a grace period. My life is back to normal and I am relieved that all this came to pass, it could been worse

Experian Free Credit IS A SCAM, horrible people, horrible business, they post ads on craigslist of fake roommates and then ask for a credit report using their site, major Karma to these people will be coming. Sad that money is more important to them than doing the right thing.

Sorry to see that so many people get scammed.

The ONLY upside is that you have a LEGITIMATE dispute when creditors and debt buyers come hounding or suing you. And I wish you took the time to file a public complaint with the Cal. AG. The REAL crime is that these thugs are allowed to defraud people with impunity and the REGULATORS deserve more jail time than these crooks.

Also, if they are still in business you CAN sue them.

If you were denied due to your Experian credit report, get your FREE report at http://www.experian.com/reportaccess/.

Make sure you SAVE the report and the report # because you can get free new reports for the next 3 months with the report #.

Obviously, make sure nothing incorrect is on the report and of course talk to your bank. They CAN tell you why exactly they declined your loan, whether they used a credit score, etc.

I resently applied for truck loan on a 2007 f-150 that was a great deal for 10,500. My bank went through Experian to investigate my credit. I was quickly denied the loan to my disbelief and I'm highly upset, still! My bank is first national bank, Texas /First convenience bank, San Angelo, TX. I filed bankrupt in 1997 and have no debt since. I have been with my bank for over 5 years and feel like I was kicked to the curb. I have never been denied a loan in my life. I have bought 3 houses and 5 cars in the past. Is there anything I can do? Thanks Rickson Thomas
