I’m using my PayPal debit card wherever credit cards are accepted because I like getting the 1.5% cash back. A couple weeks ago I noticed that I hadn’t received any email notices after we did our shopping in town. That’s a bit annoying, but not nearly as important as NOT receiving notification of backup funding.
What about PayPal users who had overdraft charges because they didn’t know that money was being transferred from their bank account?
Yesterday I finally called PayPal and after 20 minutes on the phone, having to deal with their horrible automated system and then several transfers, I was finally informed that they did a system update about 2 weeks ago and subsequently these debit card related emails no longer went out.
Why didn’t they NOTIFY us?
Why did I have to waste 20 minutes on the phone to find out that it’s a KNOWN problem?
I constantly get all kinds of promotional PayPal email, but PayPal doesn’t think it’s necessary to advise its customers of this IMPORTANT system failure. The PayPal rep was very polite and assured me that he will forward my suggestion to management. A day later, I still have NOT received any notice about this problem and that’s why I decided to start this new PayPal blog.
Apparently they have been unable to fix this email problem and there was no ETA for the fix.
I sure hope PayPal will reimburse related overdraft fees charged by banks.
UPDATE 7/29/11: Apparently this was finally fixed as I received notification of a debit card purchase.
UPDATE 8/1/11: Apparently ONLY purchase notifications are sent out. I had 5 transfers from my bank account today and received no notices whatsoever. And still no notice from PayPal about the problem.
UPDATE 8/2/11: Used my debit card online and did NOT receive anything from PayPal.
UPDATE 8/4/11: Received notices of purchases again, but don’t know yet whether the backup funding notices work now.
UPDATE 8/12/11: I finally received a notice for backup funding from bank account, so hopefully this works now.
UPDATE 10/20/11: The notifications have been working EXCEPT for fuel purchases. I used to get those $1 authorizations, but haven’t received those since July.
